The Barak Family: Courage, Loss, and New Beginnings
Once thriving in Afghanistan, the Barak family’s world was turned upside down by violence and loss. The father, a respected orthopaedic surgeon, lost his practice and loved ones to conflict, forcing the family to flee everything they knew.
Arriving in Australia on a humanitarian visa, the Baraks faced the daunting challenge of starting over. The father, unable to practise medicine, took any work he could find, while the mother became the family’s anchor, guiding them through new languages and customs. Together, they worked tirelessly to create hope and stability for their children.
Among them is a remarkable 16-year-old living with disability, whose resilience and ambition shine brightly. Inspired by his family’s journey, he dreams of becoming a migration lawyer to help others in need.
With the support of West Welcome Wagon and the community, the Baraks are rebuilding their lives—learning, working, and giving back. Their courage and determination remind us that, with compassion and support, families forced to flee can find safety and thrive in a new home.
